Every business should have a digital marketing and search engine optimization strategy – whether it’s a small, medium or large business. If you implement these strategies correctly, they’ll help customers find your website in online searches, resulting in more website traffic, increased lead generation and sales. As a small business owner myself, I’ve developed and followed a digital marketing and search engine optimization plan, and along the way, I’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. I look forward to sharing my knowledge in an hour-long webinar on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 10:00 am PST, with the members of the Connect.Data.com community. Here are a few tips and some of the strategies that I’ll be discussing during the webinar:
Getting Started with Your Digital Marketing Strategy
Digital marketing is the umbrella term for all the different ways that you can deploy to connect with customers online, including search engine optimization (aka SEO). One of the first things I make my student do in our SEO certification training is developing buyer-person profiles. I developed a template that students can fill out so that they intimately know whom they are going to target with their digital marketing efforts. Students will also have to perform competitive research and identify the keywords that potential customers type into Google and other search engines. Doing this research upfront is key to succeeding with your overall strategy down the road. There’s no way around it!
Make Sure Your Website is Mobile Friendly
People are now performing more Google searches on their mobile devices than on their desktop devices. That said, you will lose business if you can’t reach customers through a user-friendly, fast mobile website. So what’s a mobile-friendly site? Among many other things, it means the site loads quickly over a mobile connection, maximizes the small space so a user doesn’t have to scroll a lot and uses large enough text. You can use the Google Webmasters Mobile-Friendly Test to see whether your website is optimized for mobile devices. I also recommend that you read Google’s guidelines on mobile websites for additional information. Once you have your digital marketing strategy in place, you want consumers to be able to quickly and easily find your daily promotion or fun photo on their phone where they can purchase the product or promote it to their network.
Use the Data from Google Search Console to Your Advantage
Google Search Console provides all kinds of rich data about your website that you can use in your digital marketing and SEO strategy. For example, this free tool can show you what keywords are actually driving traffic to your website. You can then make these keywords a part of your overall SEO and content marketing plan.
Set up a Google My Business Account
Google has a service called Google My Business, which enables business owners to become more visible in Google search and Google Maps. You set up an account by customizing your business information such as your phone number, address and hours. A great way to appear prominently in Google Maps is by earning positive reviews from your customers. As you can see from the example below, both of our Boulder and Denver business listings show up in the Google Maps search result when someone does a search for “seo agency boulder”:
By setting up a Google My Business account, you’ll be able to track data over time too, like how many views you’re getting, how many people asked for directions to your business, etc.
Love It or Hate It: Social Media Marketing Needs to Be Part of Your Strategy
More and more, people turn to social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. to search for things. Or people may read something interesting about a product that a friend posted on social media and look it up based on the comment. You don’t want to miss out on all these kinds of opportunities, so make sure to include your target audiences’ preferred social media platforms in your overall digital marketing strategy.
